Using the fmin-blackout method of studying auroral absorption, data from over 50 ionosonde stations in the northern hemisphere are analyzed during the geomagnetic storm with SC 0810 UT on 28 October 1961. Injun I energetic particle measurements are available during the main phase. It is demonstrated that auroral absorption is present on both sides of the high-latitude boundary of the trapping region for electrons greater than 40 keV. The increased auroral absorption observed during the morning hours is apparently associated with the increased precipitation of energetic electrons during the morning hours reported by several investigators. Large fluxes of electrons with energies between 10 keV and 40 keV, reported north of the 40 keV boundary, and the associated auroral absorption observed north of the boundary suggest that the high-latitude trapping boundary for 10 keV electrons might be at a greater latitude than the high-latitude trapping boundary for 40 keV electrons. Ionospheric responses to isolated high-latitude spikes of 40 keV electrons have not yet been detected.
