Expected future climate changes are compared with past changes in the areas of forcing, timing of change, and background conditions. The rapid warming anticipated from anthropogenic greenhouse gases has no obvious precedents, and the anticipated warmth has probably never existed with an ocean/cryosphere/vegetative distribution similar to today's. The most relevant use of paleoclimate data is to test current models and physical processes, which may then help these models forecast future changes.
