Hydrological sensitivity (HS) is a key aspect of the climate system's response to increasing greenhouse gases. As such, it is important to understand whether HS depends on the magnitude of CO2 forcing. Here, we address this question by analyzing idealized experiments with abrupt CO2 forcing ranging from 2×CO2 to 8×CO2, with two distinct climate models. We find little change in apparent HS between 2× to 4×CO2, and almost no change beyond 5×CO2. We validate this finding under transient CO2 forcing increasing by 1% per year up to 8×CO2. Additionally, we analyze HS under the same 1% per year forcing in more than 15 CMIP5 and CMIP6 models, and obtain the same results. Lastly, we examine LongrunMIP models with 1000-year long runs and again find little change in HS. This wealth of results demonstrates that apparent HS is a very weak function of CO2 forcing.
