Process-based crop growth models (CMs) are key tools for understanding and managing food systems under global change, helping guide their transformation toward sustainability, equity, and resilience. CMs simulate cropping system dynamics in diverse environments, supporting decisions from breeding to adaptive crop management. Advances in remote sensing, breeding, artificial intelligence, and data platforms create new opportunities to improve CM accuracy and usability. This primer outlines CM structure, methods for improvement, and the global role of AgMIP in enhancing CM robustness and comparability. We highlight six priorities for next-generation CMs: (1) expand applications to extreme weather modeling and diverse systems such as intercropping, agroforestry, and controlled-environment farming; (2) support crop breeding; (3) combine CMs with approaches like machine learning for better inputs, bias correction, and forecasting; (4) integrate sensor networks and dynamic databases with standardized protocols to improve data quality and availability; (5) promote modular, interoperable, and open-source architectures; and (6) build modeling capacity in under-resourced regions. These actions can help create resilient and adaptive food systems for the challenges of a changing world.
