The time evolution of the classical shock-tube configuration or density discontinuity is studied, using the first two terms of a formal series solution to general initial-value problems. The occurrence of the shock and expansion wave for a gas with a repulsive δ-function interaction between particles is shown explicitly, using an analytic formula for the time and spatial evolution of the density discontinuity.
