Sci., 24, no. 2, 445-464, doi:10.5194/nhess-24-445-2024.The Canadian FireWeather Index (FWI) system, even though originally developed and calibrated for an upland jack pine forest, is used globally for all ecosystems. However, for some ecosystems, such as peatlands, the applicability of the FWI in its current form, is often questioned. In this study, we replaced the original moisture codes of the FWI with hydrological estimates resulting from the assimilation of L-band passive microwave observations into a peatland-specific land surface model. In a conservative 5 approach that maintains the integrity of the original FWI structure, the distribution of the hydrological variables was first matched to that of the corresponding original moisture codes before replacement. The resulting adapted FWI, hereafter called PEAT-FWI, was evaluated using fire data over boreal peatlands. We can conclude that adapting the FWI with model- and satellite-based hydrological information is beneficial to estimate fire danger. Specifically, the replacement of the deeper moisture codes of the FWI shows an improvement in FWI performance. Additionally, for late fires, further adaptations 10 of the fine fuel moisture code show even more improvement. The conservative approach used in this study facilitates the operational uptake of the proposed PEAT-FWI.
