Improved knowledge of the tropospheric composition is highly relevant to several branches of modern science (including the climate science) as well as to the study and protection of the environment. It is well known that the atmosphere is composed of various mixtures of gases as well as aerosol and cloud particles. This collective monograph is primarily aimed at the exposition of modern methods to retrieve the total vertical column of atmospheric gases using hyperspectral measurements, although aerosol and cloud remote sensing are also touched upon. The Editors are world leaders in the area of hyperspectral remote sensing from satellites; the first two of them are scientific architects of the satellite spectrometers GOME and SCIAMACHY. They were able to assemble a strong group of 50 experts who contributed chapters on various aspects of modern satellite remote sensing of the Earth. The book has its roots in the EU air-quality TROPOSAT and ACCENT projects.
