Micro2Macro: Origins of Climate Change Uncertainty (M2M) brought together 154 scientists in Laramie, Wyoming, and online for a 2.5-day workshop in October of 2024. Attend- ees included experts in Earth System Model (ESM) development; in situ observations; remote sensing; atmospheric chemistry; aerosol, cloud and precipitation physics; high-resolution cloud and aerosol modeling, laboratory experiments; uncertainty quantification; and field campaign design. Two-thirds of participants identified as students or early career scientists.
The motivation for gathering a large body with such diverse expertise was simple: our ability to offer predictions of the Earth system on seasonal-to-decadal scales hinges on processes that are small-scale and fast. Uncertain- ties in these "subgrid" processes and their representation in models ("parameterization") limit Earth System predictability at regional and global scales, and the process of translating advances in fundamental under- standing to improvements in predictability needs to accelerate.
