Hebden, S., N. van der Wel, H. Liddy, J. Donges, R. Wood, and M. Rast, 2025: Special issue: International Space Science Institute (ISSI) workshop on tipping elements in the Earth's climate system. Surv. Geophys., 46, no. 2, 259-264, doi:10.1007/s10712-025-09887-7.

Advancing knowledge about tipping elements, including their detection, prediction, irreversibility, and impacts on the Earth's climate and environment, are increasingly central to the priorities of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), which has recently launched a dedicated tipping points and high-impact event assessment. In addition, a newly endorsed Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) protocol for tipping elements seeks to provide a basis for directly comparing the mechanisms, timing, and impacts of abrupt change across Earth system models.

To respond to the need for more information, the European Space Agency (ESA) sought to understand the unique contribution that Earth Observation (EO) data can make in identifying potential tipping elements, improving resilience monitoring and early warning of tipping points, and assessing their possible interactions. In January 2021, ESA partnered with the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland, to hold a Forum on 'Tipping points in the Earth's Climatesi'. One of the outcomes of the Forum was the dedicated Workshop held 10-14 October 2022, 'Tipping Points and Understanding EO data needs for a Tipping Element Model Intercomparison Project (TipMIP)'. The Workshop brought researchers together from EO, climate modelling, theoretical and process understanding, and enabled communities to understand one another's priorities.
