It has been suggested by Cameron that the spectra of discrete X-ray sources in the sky may arise from two sources, each attributable to the presence of neutron stars: a thermal component emitted from the photosphere of the star and a non-thermal synchrotron or bremsstrahlung component emitted by electrons accelerated in a vibrating magnetosphere. It is assumed that the latter process derives its energy from stored gravitational energy in the form of radial oscillations with characteristic fundamental frequencies in the 103 c/s range.
