A review is made of the principal author's results regarding the use of the coherent backskatter mechanism for the interpretation of the formation of the string brightness opposition peak for some bodies of the Solar System. We present the formulas for calculating the amplitude of the coherent opposition peak ζ at zero phase angles, which are derived from on the basis of the rigorous vector multiple-scattering theory. The procedure is described for calculating the halfwidth at half maximum (HWHM) for both the layer consisting of individual scattering particles and a densely packed medium. The results of the calculation of the amplification factor ζ and the HWHM for the scattering semi-infinite layer, representing a polydispersed system of spherical particles, are given. We also examined the dependence of these quantities on the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index, the filling factor and some other parameters. It is shown that coherent backscattering from regolith layers consisting of submicrometer-sized particles with a refractive index of about 1.31 for Saturn's rings and Jupiter's Galilean satellite Europa, 1.6-1.7 for the bright asteroids 44 Nysa and 64 Angelina, and 1.6 for some structures on the Martian surface may be responsible for the string brightness opposition effects observed for these bodies of the Solar System.
