Dishon, M., and G.H. Weiss, 1980: Small sample comparison of estimation methods for the beta distribution. J. Stat. Comput. Sim., 11, 1-11, doi:10.1080/00949658008810385.

We present a comparison between the small sample properties of maximum likelihood and moment estimators of parameters of the univariate and bivariate beta distributions. The results of our simulation suggest that the theoretical advantage of the maximum likelihood method in the large sample limit also carries over to small samples.
