Several investigators have observed the occurrence of two transient peaks in isoelectric focusing and gradient electrophoresis experiments. Let v(x) be the dimensionless mobility in the presence of a gradient, and let x = x0 > 0 be the isoelectric point of a molecule initially at x = 0. If x(t) is that molecule's position at time t, we show that a transient peak will arise whenever dv/dx is an increasing function of x when x < x0. Similarly, a second peak can arise when dv/dx is a decreasing function of x for x > x0.
