One of the great challenges in predicting the rate and geographical pattern of climate change is to faithfully represent the feedback effects of various cloud types that arise via different mechanisms in different parts of the atmosphere. Cirrus clouds are a particularly uncertain component of the general circulation model (GCM) simulations of long-term climate change for a variety of reasons.
First, cirrus encompass a wide range of optical thicknesses and altitudes. Second, the dynamic processes that create cirrus are poorly resolved and different in different parts of the globe. Third, prediction of cirrus formation depends on the accuracy of transports of small concentrations of water vapor to and with the upper troposphere. Fourth, the relative humidity at which cirrus clouds form varies depending on the nature and coentration of nucleating particles. Finally, cirrus are more difficult to observe than other cloud types, and hence their parameterization is more poorly constrained by available data.
