Pontes and Menviel investigate the causes of a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) since the mid-twentieth century using the ACCESS-ESM1.5 model. They propose that subarctic freshwater fluxes are a major driver of this weakening, estimating an AMOC decline of 0.46 Sv per decade since the 1950s. Here we argue that the magnitude, timing and spatial distribution of the imposed freshwater forcing are unrealistic. This limits a robust assessment of the role of freshwater forcing in historical AMOC changes.
