Climate Adaptation Science Investigators (CASI)
Energy Workgroup
In 2021, Executive Order 14057 was issued that requires federal facilities to reach net zero emissions by 2045. As part of the efforts to reach net zero emissions, NASA Centers are required to create plans for the generation and use of energy by buildings and facilities at each Center in concert with agency directives from the Office of Strategic Infrastructure (OSI). These planning decisions depend in part upon an understanding of each NASA facility’s current and future climate. The work of the NASA Climate Adaptation Science Investigators (CASI), a partnership of NASA's Earth Science Division and the OSI, builds on NASA Earth Science research that has developed global satellite measurement and modeling systems. CASI works with data products and statistical analyses that assist in understanding the influence of both current climatological variability and potential future changes and risks in climate and weather on NASA facility energy use. This information is aimed to assist NASA facility energy managers, planners and engineers to account for local potential changes in conditions that for instance require larger loads on air conditioning and dehumidification systems. Each center envelope of facilities can assess potential future operational costs, assess upgrades to higher more efficient systems and study the feasibility of supplementing power from renewable sources. This CASI Workgroup aims to provide such information for NASA facility planning in an easily accessible way through web based request, visualization and image service system.
Projections
CASI Energy Workgroup projections for NASA Centers and their surrounding regions may be viewed on the NASA Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) website.
