Speaker: Lorenzo Polvani (Columbia Univ) Topic: Surface warming caused by large volcanic eruptions?!? We will critically re-examine the widely-held belief that large, low-latitude volcanic eruptions cause wintertime warming over the continents in the Northern Hemisphere, and present modeling and observational evidence that such warming -- if it exists at all -- is so small that post-eruption Eurasian winters are unremarkable, even for events much larger than the largest eruption of the last two thousand years.
