Abstract: This talk will present work done during the past year to simulate radiative transfer, for the study of electromagnetic radiation in the Earth's atmosphere. After motivating the study of 3D radiative transfer for remote sensing and high-resolution climate modeling, I will show some movies to illustrate the radiative transfer concepts of absorption, emission, and scattering. Then, solutions to the 3D radiative transfer equation in a few simple geometries will show absorption, emission and scattering in higher dimensions. The concluding remarks will touch on the planned application of these simulations to remote sensing inverse problems, specifically the retrieval of cloud and aerosol properties using data from the NASA Glory mission.
