Armando Howard Title: Work on improvements in ocean mixing Ocean processes involving fluid motions on scales a GCM does not resolve perform significant transports of heat, salt, momentum and passive tracers. These are parameterized as ocean mixing. I will discuss ongoing work on physically-based ocean mixing parameterizations both of small scale and mesoscale effects. For the small scale mixing these include double diffusion and the mixing due to the interaction of tides and topography, in both of which we have made progress. For the mesoscale mixing we are beginning to implement a model for more realistic represention of both isopycnal and diapycnal transports by the eddies and see evidence that the latter, usually ignored, may play an important role.
