Columbia University, Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Ice Sheet Modeling
The Center for Climate Systems Research at the Climate School of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position to study the coupling of interactive ice sheet models within the GISS Earth System Model, with a specific concentration on ice-ocean coupling.
The researcher will work to enhance the fidelity and utility of the coupled ice-climate system with the goal of producing credible sea level projections into the future and in paleo-climate contexts. Ice sheet modeling within the GISS model use the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) and experience with this component is desirable, though not essential. The researcher will present this work at professional meetings and through peer-reviewed publications, while contributing to broader team efforts.
Qualifications
- Candidates should have recently obtained or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in Atmospheric or Ocean Science or related field.
- Experience with large scale physics-based models is highly desirable. Experience with modern Fortran and/or C is desirable.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, 2-year appointment located at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) near the Columbia University Morningside campus. The target start date for this position is January 2025 with some flexibility.

Pay Transparency Disclosure
Salary Range: $75,000 - $77,336
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
