Columbia University, Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Global Forest Dynamics

The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Climate School of Columbia University in New York invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position to conduct research into global forest dynamics that will help improve the performance of Earth system models and improve their predictions of forest responses to climate extremes.

This position is under the supervision of Prof. Pierre Gentine and Dr. Ensheng Weng and will have broad collaborations with scientists in NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and New York University. This position is supported by a project of NASA Modeling, Analysis, and Prediction (MAP) Program and will be based at NASA GISS.

The successful candidate will use a recently developed vegetation model within GISS ModelE (ModelE-BiomeE) and multiple sources of observations and remote sensing data to study global forest dynamics in the changing climate and their feedback to the Earth system. Strong candidates will have familiarity with plant eco-physiology, terrestrial ecosystem modeling or Earth system modeling, and will be interested in bridging the gap between remote sensing data analysis and ecosystem modeling with data assimilation and machine learning approaches and machine learning.

The postdoc will be expected to perform original research, present the results of the research at scientific meetings, and publish first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Successful applicants must have a PhD in ecology, geoscience, Earth science, or a similar field and possess strong mathematics, programming skills and expertise in plant hydraulics modeling are desirable.
