Columbia University, Research Scientist in Cloud Physics
The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Earth Institute of Columbia University invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in cloud physics and global atmospheric modeling at its Morningside campus in New York City. Appointment is full-time for a two-year period, with the possibility of extension for a third year contingent upon funding and performance.
The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will work with a group of modelers and observationalists at Columbia University, NASA GISS, and NCAR, to develop a new cloud microphysics parameterization framework and implement it into the Energy Exascale Earth System Model. This work will be performed in collaboration with scientists at Department of Energy supported national labs, and will also implement a new perturbed-parameter ensemble to improve model fidelity and quantify uncertainty. There is flexibility to focus on subtopics such as: 1) process-level inference using observations, 2) machine learning to accelerate Bayesian parameter estimation, 3) climate model ensemble design and analysis, as well as other related applicant interests.
A PhD is required in Atmospheric, Climate, or Earth System Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
Strong coding skills in data visualization and statistical/mathematical analysis (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Fortran, etc.) required.
Excellent command of the English language (verbal and written) and strong communication skills
Experience with any of: cloud physics, microphysics schemes in regional and climate models, global satellite observations, Bayesian statistics, and/or machine learning and data science is preferred.
The anticipated target start date for this position is November 16, 2020
Appointment will be initially be for 1 year, with potential to renew up to 3 years contingent upon performance.
Search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
Columbia University benefits offered with this Officer of Research appointment.
