Columbia University: Associate Research Scientist in Water Cycle and Convective Climate

The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Earth Institute of Columbia University invites applicants for an Associate Research Scientist position in water cycle and convective climate. This appointment is full-time and located at the Columbia University Morningside Campus.

The Associate Research Scientist will work on development of the water cycle and convection code within the GISS climate model in addition to submitting grant proposals for supporting their ongoing research in collaboration with other members of the GISS model development group and science team. The Associate Research Scientist will also be expected to foster external collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in atmospheric science, earth science, environmental science, or climate science, meteorology, or other related field and two years of post-doc experience and a strong publication history.

Qualified candidates will also have: experience in modeling and analyzing water cycle phenomenon such as atmospheric river events, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and various model variability; A good working knowledge of convection parameterizations currently applied in state-of-the-art earth system models and how these parameterizations modulate the expressions of water cycle variability mentioned above; advance skills in implementing tracers to track the provenance of water cycle variability.

Excellent programming skills in FORTRAN and C++ with excellent analytical skills in at least two of the following: NCL, R, Python, Matlab, and IDL.

Familiarity with git or similar software for tracking software development is also required.
