TWP-ICE CRM INTERCOMPARISON

Dry aerosol number size distribution profile:

Comments:
  • Idealized size distribution profiles based on Dornier and Egrett measurements provided by Martin Gallagher (FSSP instrument, 0.5-um cut; CPC measurement, 10-nm cut) and Paul Williams (CPC1 measurement, 10-nm cut; CPC2 measurement, 40-nm cut), collected on flights from 20-27 January 2006. FSSP concentrations at ambient RH converted to approximate dry size by assuming drop growth factors for pure ammonium sulfate (data limited to ambient RH between 75 and 95 percent).
  • Size distribution parameters for three lognormal modes adopted from Table 7 of Allen et al. (Aerosol and trace gas measurements in the Darwin area during the wet season, JGR 113:D06306, 2008) for active monsoon conditions, except that the fine mode standard deviation is limited to 0.11 in order to provide a physical solution at all altitudes shown. A number concentration in each mode and altitude range then derived from measurements of particles in three size cuts: larger than 0.01, 0.04, and 0.5 dry diameter.
