TWP-ICE/ACTIVE MONSOON CASE STUDY
Latent heating rate profile retrievals (white symbols) versus sample case study simulations (colored symbols):
Comments:
-
Mean and maximum profiles are calculated for nine time ranges. The first three are longer time ranges:
(1) all times following an initial 36 hours for model spin-up, (2) six days of monsoon, and
(3) six days of suppressed conditions. The second six are 24-hour periods: three sequential monsoon events of
increasing intensity, followed by cirrus evolution after the third event.

Latent heating rate profile retrievals based on measurements from the C-Pol radar at Darwin are supplied by
Courtney Schumacher. Values represent 3-hour mean profiles over the TWP-ICE large-scale forcing analysis domain.
Mean values are taken here at each level for each time period.
-
Retrieval data supplied directly by the PI.
Any errors in plotting or representation shown here should be blamed on Ann Fridlind.
-
Model results are instantaneous values reported at 10-min frequency
over a domain size of about 37,000 km2. Mean values are shown at each level for each time period.
Preliminary summary:
-
Excellent general agreement, except in height of event C, the largest monsoon event.
Discontinuities are apparent in model results at the melting level.
