TWP-ICE/ACTIVE MONSOON CASE STUDY

Ice water content retrievals (white symbols, mean and maximum) versus sample case study simulations (colored bars, mean to maximum):

Comments:
  • Mean and maximum profiles are calculated for nine time ranges. The first three are longer time ranges: (1) all times following an initial 36 hours for model spin-up, (2) six days of monsoon, and (3) six days of suppressed conditions. The second six are 24-hour periods: three sequential monsoon events of increasing intensity, followed by cirrus evolution after the third event.
  • Liu IWP retrievals near the Darwin ARM site are provided at 16- to 25-km horizontal resolution (depending upon distance from satellite nadir) and 500-m vertical resolution by Guosheng Liu, derived from satellite-based AMSU-B and ground-based MMCR measurements. We plot all retrievals centered within one degree latitude and within one degree longitude of the Darwin ARM site (results negligibly affected by reducing to a 0.5 degree margin). Mean and maximum values are shown at each level for each time period.
  • All measurement data have been downloaded from the DOE ARM data archive (www.arm.gov) and use in publications is subject to the policies described there. Any errors in plotting or representation shown here should be blamed on Ann Fridlind.
  • Model results are instantaneous values reported at 3-hr frequency and 1-km resolution (and averaged horizontally over lower resolutions) with a domain size of about 37,000 km2. Mean and maximum values are shown at each level for each time period.
Preliminary summary:
  • Agreement between retrievals and model is generally within a factor of 2 to 5. Agreement aloft is slightly better for the model sensitivity test, where nudging throughout the model column resulted in stronger updrafts, higher ice injection, and more ice aloft. However, ice in the mid-troposphere is generally much higher than retrievals in all model results.
